When researching types of hard/soft wood flooring purchase for your ´DIY´ project, you`ll notice that there are many styles of wood flooring made from a wide variety of materials to choose from. This step can be overwhelming as they style and species of wood you choose sets the tone for the decor of your home.
There are 2 major kinds of wooden flooring available: engineered hardwood also solid hardwood. Solid hardwood is precise as it sounds. Milled from solid lumber, each board of solid hardwood floor is thick and lustrous with the density to be sanded down and re‐stained multiple times. Solid hardwood is incredibly durable and can hold from incorrect treatment than most kinds of flooring. However, solid hardwood is not recommended for areas exposed to wetness or high humidity, such as basements or bathrooms as these conditions may cause the wood to warp or rot.
Engineered hardwood differs from solid in that the flooring contains multiple layers of fiberboard or plywood, topped with a thin layer of real hardwood. Extraordinarily, the multiple layers laminated together make the flooring extremely tough and durable and, as with the solid hardwood, engineered flooring can be sanded and re–stained as well. Differ with solid hardwood, however, engineered hardwood is suitable for basements and bathrooms as it is quite durable to many climates and temperatures.
There are also many different species of wood you can choose from when purchasing your hardwood, including Oak, Walnut, Cherry, Ash, Bamboo, Pine, Maple and Birch. Each wood types have positive also negative aspects to review as flooring. For example, Bamboo is really durable and also environmentally friendly, as it is not exactly a wood type. But rather a grass that reproduces very quickly in nature, whereas Pine is a softwood that invites scratches and dents, however, it provides an elegant, country charm. It is completely up to you which style and kinds of flooring best fitted your interests and decor inspirations.
There is also the finish to consider when purchasing flooring. Most hardwood floors are manufactured and shipped pre-finished with a polyurethane product, resulting in a semi-gloss, satin or matte look. It is important to keep in mind the level of shine you wish your floors to have, as semi-gloss produces a high shine finish, while matte produces a more dull finish.
Installing hardwood is a DIY dream, as you are able to transform the look and style of a room without major renovation or construction. Whether you choose an engineered bamboo in a high-gloss finish, or a solid pine with a dull matte finish, laying hardwood floors will add elegance to your home for years to come.
