So a coverlet is an ornamental cover for a bedstead. They‘re usually quilted. The term woven coverlet has been used in the United States since mid 19th‐century! Back then they would've been called a coverlid and from the colonial era to the 19th century they were interlaced in nearly every community in the U.S.
Coverlets of the 18th–century would`ve been till‐woven with a woolen weft or a linen warp. Fabrics weave with a linen warp or woolen weft were named Linsey–Woolsey in colonial America. The name derives from a combination of woolen and linen. From the turn of the 19th Century, simple till—woven gave way to patterned hand woven ones made in 2 ways: Overshot Weave and Double Cloth Weave.
The overshot shot weave is woven on a simple 4‐harness looms with a plain woven cotton warp and weft and repeated geometric patterns of a supplemental dyed woollen weft. These were usually homemade and remained an usual craft in Appalachia village in early 20th—Century.
Double fabric weaves were twofold woven with 2 sets of interconnected warps or wefts needing more complicated looms among the professionals. The wools for these at that time were spun and often dyed at home then would be brought to a local weaver to make the coverlet.
Following the introduction of the Jacquard Loom, floral patterns became more popular than the modest geometric patterns. With the growth in technology today you could find a variety of coverlets. Still, the most common coverlets are made up cotton. They come as woven or quilted. When you’re looking for a coverlet you now possess a large variety of selections with fabrics and designs. If you are looking for warmth then you would want to purchase a quilted coverlet. Although still think they have a layer of batting between. The quilting is often very intricate and detailed and provides more warmth than that of a woven one.
The term matelasse coverlet is a heavyweight upholstered textile in Jacquard weave with double sets of warps and wefts. The surface of this would appear puffy or cushioned and is also know as double cloth. The fabric suggests or imitates the indentation of a quilt. It is typically woven in solid colors leaving only the relief of the pattern as its matelasse appears to be padded but actually has no padding in the fabric. Most popular today is 100% cotton or cotton blend, but you may also find ones of Silk and New to the bedding world microfiber coverlets.
